Saturday 23 November in Milan, in the spaces of ArtNoble, inaugurates Bastoni da Passeggio (Walking Sticks), a solo exhibition by Sergio Breviario, with which the artist and Ex Elettrofonica participate in the fourth edition of Milano Drawing Week, an annual event realised by Collezione Ramo in collaboration with and under the patronage of the Culture Department of the Milan City Council.
The exhibition, which is enriched by a drawing by Mario Merz from the Ramo Collection, is presented as a roundup, without beginning or end, of hypothetical walking sticks that open up reflections on nature, tell the story of a territory, emanate a suspicious and symbolic aura that has to do with what they represent, but at the same time escape this definition.
This deception, skilfully perpetrated by the author, who controls every smallest element of the drawing, is the most recognisable nature of Sergio Breviario’s work, because if it is true that the stick supports us, it is equally true that the artist loves to confuse us and superimpose infinite possible interpretations on his intentions.
He himself writes in the comprehensive manual in the exhibition entitled Drawing Walking Sticks ‘A straight line or even a bit crooked, depending on the case, joins the writer’s hand to the ground, to the earth, to the cosmos. Today I am a little less afraid knowing that my walk on these lands is well under way. My stick, art, sustains me. I realise that I am no longer me, we are no longer the subject of this story. Limbo has returned to the centre of the matter.’
So Breviario allows us to return to the centre of the matter, where art is the only cardinal point of our imaginary compass, capable of making form coincide with space and vice versa.
We would like to thank the host gallery ArtNoble for its availability and the organisation of Milano Drawing Week for choosing to invite Ex Elettrofonica and Sergio Breviario to participate in this prestigious initiative.
